Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America from its foundation in 1861 up to the end of the American Civil War in 1865.
He was born in Kentucky in 1808, but grew up in Mississippi after his family moved there in 1812 to run a cotton plantation. He graduated from university in Lexington, Kentucky in 1821, and three years later enrolled in the West Point Military Academy, from which he received his commission as a second lieutenant in 1828.
