His attempts to direct France through the 1780s crises were unsuccessful due to his uncertainty, which sparked the French Revolution, the collapse of the monarchy, and his execution on January 21, 1793. He was the only French king to be put to death, and with his passing, a continuous era of thousands of years of French monarchy came to an end.
